Indexing

Google adding your pages to its directory so they can show up in search.

💡

The Tradie Take

Indexing is like getting your business added to the Yellow Pages (remember those?). Google crawls your site, decides if you're legitimate, and then adds you to the directory. If you're not in the directory, nobody finds you when they search. Unlike the old Yellow Pages, this one's free and it updates constantly.

Definition

Indexing is Google adding your web pages to its massive directory (the index). If your page isn't indexed, it won't appear in search results no matter how good your content is. After Googlebot crawls your page, it decides whether to add it to the index. Pages can be excluded for various reasons: poor quality, duplicate content, technical issues, or being blocked.

How It Works

  • 1 Googlebot crawls your page and reads its content
  • 2 Google analyses the page for quality, relevance, and technical health
  • 3 If approved, the page is added to Google's index - now it can appear in search results
  • 4 You can check which of your pages are indexed in Google Search Console

Tips for Tradies

  • Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console to help Google find all your pages
  • Check the Indexing report in Search Console for any pages that got excluded
  • Pages with thin content (like a 50-word service page) may not get indexed
