Alt Text
Hidden descriptions of your images that help Google and blind users understand them.
The Tradie Take
Google is blind - it can't see your "after" photo of that bathroom renovation. Alt text is you telling Google what's in the picture: "Brand new bathroom with floor-to-ceiling tiles, walk-in shower, and double vanity in Surry Hills." Without it, Google just sees a blank box.
Definition
Alt text (alternative text) is a description you add to images on your website. It serves two purposes: it helps visually impaired people understand what the image shows (screen readers read alt text aloud), and it helps Google understand your images. Google can't "see" photos - it reads the alt text instead. Good alt text also gives your SEO a small boost.
How It Works
- 1 When you upload a photo to your website, you can add alt text in the settings
- 2 Screen readers read this description aloud to visually impaired visitors
- 3 Google indexes the alt text to understand what your images are about
- 4 Descriptive alt text helps your images show up in Google Image Search too
Tips for Tradies
- Describe what's in the image naturally - "beautiful bathroom renovation Surry Hills" not "IMG_4723.jpg"
- Include your keyword if it fits naturally, but don't stuff it
- Leave alt text empty for decorative images - telling Google "orange border" isn't useful
