Keyword
The words people type into Google when looking for a tradie.
The Tradie Take
A keyword is what a customer shouts into the void when something breaks. They don't search "hydronic heating system expert" - they search "hot water not working." Your website needs to speak their language, not your trade's technical terminology. If you call it "hydronic heating" but they call it "hot water," use their words.
Definition
A keyword is a word or phrase that people type into search engines when looking for something. For a plumber, keywords include "emergency plumber," "blocked drain Sydney," "hot water repair," and "gas fitter near me." Your website content needs to include the keywords your customers actually search for - not what you call your services internally.
How It Works
- 1 When someone searches a keyword, Google matches it to pages in its index
- 2 Pages that use that keyword prominently and naturally are more likely to rank
- 3 You want to target keywords your customers actually search, not generic terms
- 4 Long-tail keywords (3-5 words) are often easier to rank for than single words
Tips for Tradies
- Use keyword research tools (or just ask past customers what they searched)
- Put your main keyword in your page title, headings, and naturally in the content
- Don't stuff keywords - write for humans first, Google second
