Long-Tail Keywords
Specific, longer search phrases that are easier to rank for and convert better.
The Tradie Take
Long-tail keywords are the difference between casting a net into the ocean and putting a trap in a specific spot. Casting a wide net catches some fish but it's a lot of work. Putting a trap where you know the big fish swim (someone with a burst pipe at 2am searching "emergency plumber Bondi") is more targeted and more profitable.
Definition
Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search phrases that are less competitive but often convert better than short, generic terms. Instead of targeting "plumber" (millions of searches, impossible to rank for), you target "emergency plumber eastern suburbs Sydney" (fewer searches, but everyone searching it is ready to book). Long-tail keywords make up the majority of searches online.
How It Works
- 1 Short keywords like "electrician" are highly competitive and expensive
- 2 Long-tail keywords like "emergency electrician after hours Bondi" have less competition
- 3 People searching long-tail are further along in the buying journey
- 4 A strategy of targeting multiple long-tail keywords can outperform chasing one big keyword
Tips for Tradies
- Target phrases like "gas heater installation northern beaches" not just "plumber"
- Create separate pages for each specific service and location combination
- Long-tail keywords are especially effective for Google Ads - cheaper and more relevant
