Anchor text is what someone says when they point a customer your way. "Call this sparky for hot water systems" tells the customer exactly what you do. "Check out this guy" - not so helpful. Google thinks the same way.
Definition
Anchor text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. Instead of writing "click here" as a link, you’d write "plumber in Bondi" and make that phrase clickable. Google uses anchor text to understand what the linked page is about, so descriptive anchor text helps your SEO. Too much exact-match anchor text (every link saying exactly "plumber Bondi") can look spammy.
How It Works
- 1 When another site links to yours, the words they use as the link matter
- 2 Google reads anchor text to understand what your page is about
- 3 Natural, varied anchor text ("check out this plumber," "Bondi plumbing services," "click here") looks natural
- 4 Having all links say exactly "plumber Bondi" looks like manipulation and can hurt rankings
Tips for Tradies
- Use descriptive but natural anchor text - don't force the keyword
- Mix it up: branded ("TradeAds"), generic ("click here"), and descriptive ("plumber in Sydney")
- Internal links (linking between your own pages) should also use clear anchor text
